GUIDED TOUR AND CITY WALK IN ASSENS
How did Peter Willemoes become a hero—and why is he still seen as one?
How is the hero represented in the urban space of Assens?
Do we still need heroes?
This program introduces students to, among others, the naval hero Peter Willemoes at his birthplace, Willemoesgaarden, which houses the WILLEMOES exhibition. In addition, students will take part in a sculpture walk through the town of Assens, where we’ll explore traces of historical heroes in the form of sculptures and monuments.
In addition to history, this course can also be incorporated into creative subjects such as visual arts, crafts, and design, where it can provide a theoretical understanding of how character traits are highlighted through various forms of cultural expression (sculpture and painting).
The “Stories of Heroes” City Walk takes students on a tour of sculptures in the town of Assens, where we explore traces of heroes from the past in the form of sculptures and monuments. Students are introduced to representations of naval heroes and other heroes as sculptures in public spaces. This city walk can be effectively supplemented with the online course “War, Heroes, and Monuments.”
Students are encouraged to reflect on:
- What is a hero?
- How is the hero portrayed in the history of art and culture?
- How do people today make use of heroes, and how did our ancestors do so?
The city walk takes a playful approach to the city’s sculptures, as we explore the works of Klaus Berntsen—including those related to women’s suffrage—and Peter Willemoes.
