About Museum Vestfyn

Museum Vestfyn is an independent, state-recognized museum located in Assens. Our mission is to preserve and showcase the cultural heritage of the Municipality of Assens. The museum comprises Museum ERNST and Museum WILLEMOES, each of which showcases a part of Assens’s history in its original setting.
Museum ERNST is located in the former building of the J. Ernst Silverware Factory (Østergade 57), which Frederik Ernst transformed into a private residence housing his lavish collection of silver, art, ceramics, and more.
In the beautiful red half-timbered building in the heart of town (Østergade 36), Museum WILLEMOES tells the story of naval hero Peter Willemoes through play and interactive activities in his childhood home.
Assens Customs House at the harbor (Nordre Havevej 19) is also part of Museum Vestfyn. The building serves as a venue for both exhibitions and activities throughout the year. In addition, parts of the administration have offices on the first floor.

Seeking passionate volunteers to help run and develop CAFÉ ERNST

CAFÉ ERNST is run by a group of passionate volunteers who serve the guests.
Museum Vestfyn is looking for more cooperative volunteers to join the café’s community—could that be you?

Expectations

Volunteering at CAFÉ ERNST is a flexible role where you’ll work alongside the staff to plan the various tasks at the museum café. As a volunteer, you’ll be part of a community where there are opportunities to help the café grow. You’re not “locked in,” and no one will hold it against you if there are times when other commitments take priority. However, you’re expected to maintain good hygiene, be able to regularly participate in the shift schedule, be reliable in showing up for shifts, and take the initiative to sign up for shifts.

Volunteering isn’t just a job. There’s plenty of time for socializing and chatting with the museum’s other volunteers, the staff, and, of course, the visitors—who are the foundation of the museum’s and the café’s work.

Hours of Operation

CAFÉ ERNST has the same opening hours as the ERNST exhibition and, with a few exceptions, is open from late March through late October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is open both on weekdays and on weekends, so you must also be prepared to work shifts on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

About the Museum Café

CAFÉ ERNST is part of Museum Vestfyn’s ERNST exhibition complex at Østergade 57, Assens. In the summer of 2022, the historic premises—which formerly housed the workshop of silverware manufacturer Frederik Ernst (1892–1976)—were converted into a café. The café’s interior design follows the same style found in the exhibition, Frederik Ernst’s former home. At CAFÉ ERNST, you can read the day’s newspaper and purchase cold drinks, coffee, and sweets. The café offers both a view of and direct access to the museum garden—Frederik Ernst’s Garden—where you can enjoy your coffee when the weather permits. Admission to both CAFÉ ERNST and Frederik Ernst’s Garden is free. The café often hosts various events, such as storytime in collaboration with the Assens Libraries, singing and music, creative crafts, and fun cut-and-paste activities for children during school breaks.

Contact

If you’re interested in volunteering at CAFÉ ERNST, we’d love to invite you to visit the café so you can get a feel for the place and have a casual chat with the curator in charge and/or one of the café’s volunteers.
