The online course prepares students for the challenges a child might have faced during the industrialization of the late 1800s. The course encourages students to explore the topic creatively through the medium of the graphic novel.
Students will gain insight into the following:
- What was a working-class child's workday like during industrialization?
- What was a school day like for a working-class child?
- How could working-class children help support their families in their free time, and what dangers lurked?
- What opportunities did the children have to shape their own future?
This unit is linked to the students’ work on the topic of industrialization, and throughout the unit, students are invited to experience the daily life of a child in the late 1800s. The unit consists of inspiration booklets, a fact booklet, and four short films that provide insight into the daily lives of children in the late 1800s.
