In 2024, it will be 500 years since Assens had its market town privileges renewed. How well do you and your class know the history of the market town?
Did you know that you can actually trace history in urban spaces today?
This program is designed for a walking tour of the historic market town, which can be taken either on your own or with a guide from the museum (see the program “A Walk Through the Market Town”).
For those taking the self-guided city walk, the materials include a guide featuring stories about the city and accompanying illustrations.
Throughout the course, students are introduced to local history and learn about the significance—for Assens and its residents—of the town’s status as a market town. Students are encouraged to map the historic town and, through historical scenarios, understand how relationships of influence and interdependence have shaped the town’s development.
We'll trace connections from the past to the present—and, if you'd like, to the future.
This teaching guide is intended as a suggestion for how to approach the topic. Of course, it can also be used as inspiration, or selected sections can be used.
Learning Objectives:
The goal of this course is to provide students with knowledge of local history and how traces of the past can be seen in today’s city. At the same time, students can reflect on what has led to historical changes in the local area.
